Quote
A thing of beauty is a joy forever: Its loveliness increases; it will never pass into nothingness; but still will keep a bower quiet for us, and a sleep full of sweet dreams, and health, and quiet breathing.Endymion, John Keats
There is absolutely no way that everything about this scene wasn’t meant to demonstrate John’s jealousy. From the writing to the acting to the very lighting of the kitchen and hallway. For comparison, look at the scene in TSoT where Sherlock is trying to guess John’s middle name. There’s a shot of the hallway and it’s blue. This green color palette was deliberate. It was either lit that way during filming or the color was manipulated during production, or likely both.
Okay so something has been bothering me about this scene for awhile, and honestly, it’s pretty rad.
When Janine steps out she’s wearing very, very little, right? But she says she heard people. In fact, she had suspicions about who she heard. She wouldn’t come out dressed like that in front of a group of people, especially Mycroft. She then continues to walk around in said outfit, even after it’s been confirmed John is there. (She also has never slept with Sherlock. “Once would have been nice”. So, really, there’s no reason for her to be wearing so little, except for comfort.)
Next is her name calling. No one calls Mycroft “Mike”. No one. I feel like Sherlock would do so just to annoy him, but he doesn’t. Janine does.
This is my favorite. “Sherl”. Now, there was a meta I saw awhile ago saying there was a glass door leading into Sherlock’s bedroom, which would further prove my point. But, anyway, there was no way she couldn’t tell Sherlock was already in the shower. From just the door closing, the door being closed, or water running.
So. The point? Two points of the same point. “I’m dating mother fucking Sherlock Holmes and look how close we are” and “Oh, John, look at this, I’ve got him and you don’t.”
The latter would bring out the jealousy, the main point of this scene.
Janine is a smart woman. She “knows what kind of man” Sherlock is. She says this once at the wedding, when she is flirting, and again when Sherlock’s been shot in the hospital after they’ve finished talking about how “once would have been nice” (*cough cough* sex *cough cough*).
She knows Sherlock’s gay. She knew “that was never going to happen”. She knew what she was getting into, and hell, she was extremely smart about it. She rubbed it in John’s face so well. Even with the cheesiest line alive, “Solve me a crime, Sherlock Holmes.”
